Advice from the Groomer: Preparing Your Dog for a Stress-Free Grooming Experience

From the time we bring them home, dogs can be taught how to behave for the groomer. It all starts at home — long before the first bath or haircut.

Positive reinforcement is one of the best techniques for teaching calm behavior. It rewards your dog for the actions you want to see more of, building trust and confidence along the way.

When introducing your dog to brushing or grooming, start slowly. Reward calm behavior with gentle praise or a small treat. Gradually increase how long you handle their paws, ears, or coat, always making it a positive experience.

With consistency and patience, your dog will begin to associate grooming with something enjoyable — not stressful. And that makes the process smoother for everyone, including your groomer!

Remember

Dogs look to us for direction — and that direction starts with you.

By setting the tone, staying calm, and making grooming positive from the start, you’ll build a routine your dog can trust.
