The Missing Ingredient in Dog Training: Trust- By Student Lamar Crawford

This is my first-ever blog, but I’m giving it my best effort — because there’s one thing I believe everyone should know about dog training: there’s a crucial ingredient that too many people overlook.

That ingredient is trust.

To me, trust is the key to every successful training relationship. The dog and trainer must trust each other completely — no hesitation, no doubt.

Yes, a dog might follow your commands out of fear, but fear doesn’t last. The moment that dog senses an escape from pressure or uncertainty, they’ll take it. Fear can control behavior temporarily — but it can never build partnership.

Why Trust Matters More Than Treats

Treats are helpful tools, and they can certainly build positive associations. But if a dog only listens because they expect a reward, that relationship has limits.

When trust is the foundation, the dynamic changes entirely. A dog that trusts you doesn’t need a handful of snacks to stay focused. A simple pat on the head, a smile, or a kind word becomes just as powerful as any treat.

Once a dog trusts you, they’ll want to work with you — not just for food, but because they believe in you.

The Power of Mutual Trust

When you trust your dog and your dog trusts you, the possibilities are endless. Training becomes teamwork. Communication becomes effortless.

That kind of trust doesn’t just create obedience — it creates connection. It’s what transforms a working relationship into a lifelong bond built on love, respect, and understanding.

Whether it’s a beloved pet, a PTSD service dog, or a bomb-sniffing K9, trust is what keeps you both safe, steady, and connected. You trust each other with your livelihood — and your hearts.

And when a dog feels that love and trust radiating from you?
Game on.
